After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the implosion of the ussr and the Eastern security and defense system (the end of the Warsaw Pact) has been considered the greatest achievement of the Accords. Instead of acting as a catalyst for the ussr, they backfired. This was because the recognition of the inviolability of national borders and respect for territorial integrity gave the ussr a certain advantage over its immediate adversaries, given that it was eager to confirm its territorial gains in Eastern Europe. Furthermore, the fact that the Final Act allowed for peaceful border changes and that the us, like other nato member states, refused to recognize the forced inclusion of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia into the ussr was perhaps overlooked. The West, in its pursuit of a sort of moral superiority, failed to sufficiently consider that the issue of human rights protection was not unilateral, but involved all signatory states.
