This essay analyzes the introduction of the cults of Sicilian-Byzantine and Oriental saints in Saracena, between the Middle Ages and the modern age. The research is based on hagiographic, documentary and iconographic sources, as well as on toponymic data that were used to create a GIS ‘database’. The essay also examines the Vitae of San Leone, Bishop of Catania and the spread of his cult in Saracena, where the saint became the patron saint of the city, between cultured religiosity and popular devotion.
