The paper explores the application of virtual reality in healthcare, benefiting both patients and clinicians during critical medical interventions. After a brief general introduction in which the peculiarities of virtual reality in relation to individual identity development are highlighted, the paper dwells on the psychological mechanisms at the core of its impactful use to manage pain during medical procedures. In particular, the Softcare Studios projects are cited as real–world case studies, analyzing both opportunities and challenges of analogue innovations in the care field.
