Since the phrase “immersed sense” presents an evident oxymoron, this paper seeks to explore its possible alternative interpretations. The discussion begins by examining the notion of sense as something in which we are immersed, focusing on aesthetic atmospheres and the concept of the semiosphere. The analysis then moves to various figures of physical and metaphorical immersion, including immersion in liquids or spaces (as in shipwrecks, lustration, baptism, drowning, or caves) and metaphorical immersion (as in mirrors, games, dreams, mysticism, and aesthetic emotion). Each of these scenarios is shown to generate its own distinct form of meaning. However, the paper also highlights the inherent risk associated with such immersive experiences: the potential for dazzling or obscuring, leading to the loss of meaning — and, ultimately, of humanity itself.
