Through a series of case studies of linguistic errors of different types, this paper aims to examine Italian, German and English phrasemes belonging to the world of football. The analysis sheds light on the role of orality and of the error in the coinage process. Particular attention is devoted to the propagation and variability of phrasemes, i.e. whether they are disseminated in their canonical form or tend to be modified or used as patterns. To specify their function and propagation, corpus–based analyses are conducted with the corpus manager software Sketch Engine. Our research shows that linguistic errors can sometimes be considered variation and can decisively influence both, phraseme coinage and propagation.
