This paper aims to briefly explore from a semiotic and mediological point of view the theoretical problems raised by the project of using digitised family images to produce useful stories for the integration of the elderly. In particular, three fundamental oppositions are taken into consideration: that between images and narratives, between history and memory, between societies oriented towards the future and the past. From this analysis we conclude that the project in question is important not only for its possible social effects, but also because it thematises a fundamental problem, that of the intergenerational passage of that complex of values, definitions and experiences that are at the heart of the semiotic notion of Encyclopedia.
