Artificial Intelligence is a pervasive tool with the potential to revolutionize every sector. In healthcare, it represents one of the most compelling social and economic opportunities to date. However, its adoption is at the center of conflicting narratives: on the one hand, AI is described as a resource capable of improving efficiency and reducing human errors; on the other, it is accused of fostering dehumanization and creating technical–industrial opacity. Some scholars argue that underutilizing AI could jeopardize the economic and healthcare sustainability of national systems. For instance, Ugo Pagallo (2022) emphasizes that the predictive capabilities of smart devices could significantly reduce diagnostic errors, enabling early detection of chronic and life–threatening diseases. Nonetheless, this optimistic view is countered by concerns about the dehumanization of the doctor–patient relationship and the lack of transparency in handling personal data. Advocating for a balanced and optimistic perspective, Buelens (2021) and Wiring (2022) underline the importance of legal safeguards, which can ensure ethical implementation by maintaining decision– making responsibility in the hands of physicians. In this context, semiotics provides a valuable framework for analyzing the narratives surrounding AI in healthcare. How is AI represented in these discourses? What rhetorical strategies are employed? And what responsibilities emerge from the various perspectives in the field? This study investigates the meanings constructed by these narratives, contributing to a critical understanding of the social and cultural implications of AI in medicine.
