The history of shorthand in modern Western Europe addresses the issue of rapid and accurate speech transcription before the advent of mechanical voice recording devices. Examining shorthand texts from the 17th to 19th centuries, this paper traces the development of stenography as a tool for faithfully representing spoken language and communication.
