This study examines the role of voice in the identity perception and social representation of deaf individuals. While voice is traditionally considered integral to language, self-representation, and social interaction, its significance for deaf individuals varies according to context, communicative goals, and interlocutors. Through an exploratory focus group study with 11 deaf participants, this research investigates how voice is perceived, used, and negotiated in different social settings. The findings reveal that voice does not hold a fixed connotation in the deaf experience; instead, its role is fluid, shaped by contextual factors and the asymmetrical power dynamics between spoken and signed languages. Participants demonstrated adaptability in their communication choices, prioritizing effective interaction over normative expectations regarding voice use. Ultimately, the findings suggest that while voice may not be a primary identity marker for deaf individuals, it remains a socially constructed element that influences interactions with both deaf and hearing individuals.
