L’autore, pur confessando di avere maturato la propria vocazione al metier d’historien perché sollecitato dalla lettura di autori come Proust o Mann, sceglie come grandi libri di storia opere che, sebbene vertano sul medioevo, riflettono l’attenzione rivolta al Novecento e ad alcuni momenti della storia generale di quel secolo, i quali influenzarono in maniera decisiva il contesto di produzione di quegli stessi libri.

Although the author confesses that he developed his vocation for the metier d’historien after reading authors such as Proust and Mann, he chooses as his great history books which, although dealing with the Middle Ages, reflect his interest in the twentieth century and certain moments in the general history of that century which had a decisive influence on the context in which those books were written.
