Over the past two decades, the spread of social networks and instant messaging systems (including WhatsApp) has led to the emergence of hybrid forms of communication, which exist in a state of suspension between written and spoken, formal and informal, and synchronous and asynchronous communication. The paper aims at presenting a resource that is currently under construction at the University of Pavia, namely the WhAP! corpus. This will be done by describing the first steps of its construction, the data collection criteria, and its main features at the current state. In addition, preliminary data from the corpus will be analyzed to highlight the distinctive characteristics of these linguistic uses, including the possibility to quote previous messages through the citation function. Furthermore, the multimodality of the medium will be examined, including the presence of multimedia content (images, videos, and stickers, among others) and voice messages.
