This research explores the digital discourse produced by university students in virtual communities termed Spotted on the Instagram platform. It will be examined the prevalence of non-standard language varieties in this unique communicative environment as it emulates speech in Web 2.0 written format. This very context serves as an observatory for informal language realised in the written form, providing insights into contemporary linguistic practices among youth in digital spaces. Here is presented the case of Neapolitan Spotted communities when using code-alternation strategies. The primary goal of the paper is to investigate the features of the presence of a particular non-standard variety traditionally viable in off-line environments, attesting to its forms and modes in the Virtual Linguistic Landscape (VLL) through perusal of texts posted by Italian university students in the virtual spaces of their peer groups.
