Today, Buddhism is one of the religious actors that seem to exhibit a stronger inclination towards the advancements in immersive technology and cutting-edge uses of artificial intelligence, and a vast literature specifically emphasizes the potential of these technologies in aiding the contemplative practices of its practitioners. This chapter examines the epistemic settings of Buddhist meditation (jhāna) and immersive technology, specifically focusing on the their narratives and understandings. Both anthropotechnics share the distinctive trait of being fully immersive, allowing the subject’s consciousness to be entirely concentrated on non-ordinary cognitive and perceptive patterns. The former, serving as a method of spiritual development, proposes the attainment of a non-dialectic state of mind as a prelude to the experience of nibbāna. On the other hand, artificial intelligences have been refined to the point that they can offer immersion in physically reduced but highly evocative artificial environments, such as virtual and augmented reality. Both experiences are based on three fundamental components of an identical relationship: the perceiving subject, the medium through which the experience occurs, and the content or nature of the experience itself. The chapter aims to analyse these factors to investigate the opaque intersections between empowerment, the digital market, and modern transformations of Buddhism.
