This article analyzes phraseological errors in written Spanglish, focusing on Hispanic press in the United States. Drawing on a corpus of recent articles from El Diario de Nueva York and La Opinión de Los Ángeles, it explores phenomena such as literal translations, calques, code–switching, and false friends. These deviations from the standard phraseological norms of Spanish not only hinder intelligibility but may also lead to social stigmatization. The study interprets these errors as the result of linguistic contact and bilingual competence, and advocates a more nuanced view of Spanglish—as a legitimate form of communication that reflects the complex cultural identity of Hispanic communities in the U.S.
