This essay will attempt a genealogical reconstruction to show how Gramsci’s concept of living philology – for the first time mentioned in 6 of the second series of Notes on Philosophy-Materialism and Idealism (Appunti di filosofia – Materialismo e idealismo. Prima serie) – was ultimately incorporated into that of co-research, that is in one of the central and fundamental concepts of the theory and practice of Italian Workerism. To this end, it will examine several passages from the Prison Notebooks on sociology and on Historical Materialism: A System of Sociology of Nikolaj Ivanovic Bucharin, as well as some of the positions of Guiducci, Pizzorno, Alquati and, more generally, of the new Italian left.
