Studies based on impoliteness define mock impoliteness as a communicative strategy involving the canceling of traditional perlocutionary effects flowing from conventionalised impoliteness formulae (e.g. insults, threats etc.). Specifically, this pilot study aims to observe the prosodic behavior of mock impoliteness when the speakers use it to promote friendship and solidarity with their interlocutors. A sample of 72 target sentences (36 genuine impolite sentences 36 mock impolite sentences) performed by a group of Italian (Bari) male speakers was analysed using Praat with which the values of F0 , intensity, speech rate, and duration of the nuclear vowel were extracted. The results suggest that the two types of impoliteness investigated differ, especially concerning F0 and intensity values. Genuine impoliteness is characterised by significantly more marked prosody than mock impoliteness, which relies on a solid paralinguistic apparatus.
