Reported Speech is considered in the literature as one of the phenomena that involves the most evident prosodic modifications in spontaneous speech. This study presents an analysis of Reported Speech based on a corpus of spontaneous spoken Italian, which allows for the exemplification of the wide functional variation associated with this phenomenon. To highlight prosodic markers and pragmatic characteristics, 50 short utterances extracted from the corpus have been analyzed. The data shows that the prosodic variation is greater when the reported speech is not introduced by an explicit marker.
