The essay aims to face Eugenio Garin’s 1959 Filosofia come sapere storico, through the controversies and correspondence of those years. On the one hand, the paper intends to show, also through some unpublished documents, how much Garin’s position owed to the interlocution with contemporary reflections taking place in the historiographic world. On the other hand, through the public and private debate with Enzo Paci, the essay will be delve into the relationship between philosophy and temporality. This will show the difficulties of the encounter between historicism and phenomenology in the post-war Italian philosophical debate.
